Emergency Dentistry In Salt Lake City: Same-Day Relief, Same-Day Treatment, And A Clear Plan
BY Velux Dental

Dental emergencies have a way of showing up at the worst possible time. A tooth starts throbbing at night. A crown falls off before a big day. A cracked molar suddenly feels sharp and sensitive. In those moments, the hardest part is often not knowing what to do next.

At Velux Dental SLC, emergency visits are built around three priorities: get you comfortable, find the real cause, and stabilize the problem the same day whenever possible. If you’re dealing with urgent dental pain right now, start here and call us: Emergency Dentistry.

What Counts As A Dental Emergency?

Some problems can wait a few days. Others shouldn’t. We want you to call right away if you have:

  • Severe toothache that throbs or won’t let you sleep
  • Swelling in your gums, jaw, or face
  • A broken or cracked tooth (especially if it hurts to bite or is temperature-sensitive)
  • A lost crown or filling leaving a tooth exposed
  • A knocked-out tooth or a tooth that feels loose after trauma
  • Bleeding or cuts in your mouth (gums, tongue, cheeks, lips)
  • A dental issue that is rapidly worsening over hours instead of days

If you’re unsure, call anyway. Emergency care is about preventing small problems from becoming big ones.

What We Can Treat Same Day

When you come in for emergency care, we’re not limited to “taking a look.” Depending on what we find, same-day treatment can include:

  • Same-day crowns for cracked or structurally compromised teeth
  • Root canals when pain is coming from infection inside a tooth
  • Extractions when saving the tooth isn’t predictable
  • Fillings when decay or a broken area needs immediate repair
  • Soft tissue repair for oral injuries (cuts to gums, tongue, cheeks, or lips)

These are all part of our emergency treatment capabilities outlined here: Emergency Dentistry.

If your emergency is related to a cracked tooth or a broken restoration, our one-visit restorative option can be a major advantage: Same-Day Crowns And Bridges.

What To Do Right Now Before You Come In

The right first steps can reduce pain and protect your tooth while you’re getting scheduled.

If You Have A Severe Toothache

  • Rinse gently with warm water
  • Floss carefully to remove anything trapped between teeth
  • Use a cold compress on the cheek if swelling is present
  • Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed
  • Avoid chewing on the painful side

Toothache pain can come from deep decay, infection, or cracks—so even if the pain eases temporarily, the source often still needs treatment. Call us for a diagnosis and plan through Emergency Dentistry.

If A Crown Falls Off

  • Save the crown if you have it
  • Avoid chewing on that side
  • Keep the area clean with gentle brushing
  • Call right away

A missing crown leaves tooth structure exposed and vulnerable. In some cases we can reseat it; in others, the tooth needs rebuilding and a new restoration. If a crown is needed and the tooth is a good candidate, we can often restore it with a one-visit solution: Same-Day Crowns And Bridges.

If A Tooth Cracks Or Breaks

  • Rinse gently
  • Avoid chewing on that side
  • Use a cold compress if swelling begins
  • Call promptly

Cracks tend to worsen under bite pressure. The sooner we stabilize the tooth, the more options you usually have. For many cracked teeth, a crown is the protective solution, and our CEREC workflow can help you avoid the temporary-crown phase: Same-Day Crowns And Bridges.

If You Have Swelling

Swelling can be a sign of infection. Don’t wait for it to “settle down.” Call immediately so we can evaluate whether the tooth needs a root canal or whether removal is the healthier choice.

If an extraction is needed, our surgical care is handled in-house through Oral Surgery.

If A Tooth Is Knocked Out

A knocked-out tooth is time-sensitive. Keep it moist and call immediately.

What Your Emergency Visit Looks Like (So You Know What To Expect)

Emergency care should feel calm and structured. Here’s the typical flow:

1) Focused Diagnosis

We’ll ask targeted questions about:

  • When the pain started
  • What triggers it (cold, heat, chewing, releasing your bite)
  • Whether swelling is present
  • Whether trauma occurred
  • Whether a restoration broke or fell out

Then we evaluate the area clinically and use imaging when needed. Tooth pain can come from multiple causes that feel similar—so diagnosing the source matters.

2) Comfort First

Our goal is to get you comfortable early in the visit. Once you’re numb and calm, treatment becomes easier and more efficient.

3) Same-Day Stabilization Or Treatment

Depending on what we find, we’ll do what’s most appropriate that day:

  • A filling to seal exposed decay or fracture
  • A root canal to remove infection and relieve pressure
  • A same-day crown to protect a cracked or weakened tooth
  • An extraction when saving the tooth isn’t predictable
  • Soft tissue repair for oral injuries

Because emergency care often overlaps with restorative and surgical steps, these pages may be helpful if you want to understand your options:

4) A Clear Next-Step Plan

Even when the final solution requires staged care, you’ll leave knowing:

  • What caused the problem
  • What we did today
  • What still needs to happen
  • What to do at home
  • What symptoms mean you should call

We don’t want you wondering what’s next.

Why Same-Day Crowns Matter In Emergency Dentistry

Many emergencies are structural: a cracked tooth, a large failing filling, or a tooth that’s breaking down. When a tooth is compromised, waiting weeks can leave it vulnerable to:

  • worsening cracks
  • increased sensitivity
  • deeper bacterial entry
  • a repairable tooth becoming non-restorable

Because we provide same-day crowns as part of emergency treatment, we can often protect a vulnerable tooth quickly when a crown is the right solution. If you want to understand how we complete crowns in one visit, start here: Same-Day Crowns And Bridges.

When An Emergency Turns Into A Bigger Plan

Sometimes an emergency is a one-time event. Other times, it’s a signal that the mouth needs a more stable long-term strategy—especially if you’ve had repeated fractures, infections, or multiple failing teeth.

If a tooth can’t be saved predictably, we’ll talk through replacement options. That may include:

We’ll help you choose the option that fits your health, timeline, and goals—without pressure.

The Next Step Is Simple

Dental emergencies are stressful, but they’re also solvable—especially when you’re seen early and treated with a clear plan.
