Dental Emergency Or Extraction? How We Decide The Right Same-Day Treatment In Salt Lake City

Dental Emergency Or Extraction? How We Decide The Right Same-Day Treatment In Salt Lake City
BY Velux Dental

A dental emergency can feel overwhelming because symptoms often escalate quickly. A tooth starts throbbing. A crown falls off. A cracked tooth suddenly hurts when you bite. You may wonder whether the tooth can be saved, whether you need a root canal, or whether an extraction is the only option.

At Velux Dental SLC, emergency care is designed to give you answers quickly. We provide same-day emergency treatment for urgent dental problems, including toothaches, broken teeth, same-day crowns, root canals, extractions, fillings, and soft tissue repair. Start here if you need urgent care: Emergency Dentistry.

What We Look For During An Emergency Exam

The same symptom can have different causes. For example, biting pain may come from a crack, deep decay, an infected nerve, a loose crown, or gum inflammation. That’s why we begin with a focused exam and diagnostic imaging when needed.

We evaluate:

  • Where the pain is coming from
  • Whether infection is present
  • Whether the tooth is cracked or fractured
  • Whether the tooth can be restored
  • Whether surrounding bone and gums are healthy
  • Whether same-day stabilization is possible

When We Try To Save The Tooth

Whenever a tooth can be predictably saved, we look at options to stabilize and restore it. Depending on the diagnosis, that may include a filling, root canal, or same-day crown.

Fillings

If the emergency is caused by a smaller area of decay or a broken filling, a filling may be enough to seal the tooth and stop sensitivity.

Root Canals

If infection or inflammation is inside the tooth, root canal therapy may be recommended to remove the source of pain and save the tooth.

Same-Day Crowns

If the tooth is cracked, heavily filled, or structurally weak, a crown may be needed to protect it from breaking further. Because we provide Same-Day Crowns And Bridges, many emergency crown cases can be completed quickly without a temporary crown phase.

When An Extraction Is The Healthiest Choice

Sometimes saving the tooth is not predictable. We may recommend extraction when:

  • The tooth is broken below the gumline
  • Infection has damaged the foundation
  • A crack extends into the root
  • There isn’t enough healthy structure for a crown
  • Repeated repairs are failing

If extraction is needed, we keep the process as gentle and clear as possible through Oral Surgery. Our goal is not just to remove the tooth—it’s to create a healthy foundation for what comes next.

What Happens If A Tooth Must Be Removed?

An extraction visit includes evaluation, numbing, gentle removal, and clear aftercare instructions. We’ll explain how to protect the healing site and what symptoms are normal.

If future replacement is part of your plan, we may discuss bone grafting or ridge augmentation. Bone grafting can help replace bone levels in the jaw, and ridge augmentation can help recreate natural gum and jaw contours after tooth loss. These procedures may support future implants or improve the foundation for other replacements through Oral Surgery.

Replacement Options After Emergency Extraction

If a tooth can’t be saved, you still have strong options.

Dental Implants

A dental implant replaces the root and supports a crown or bridge. If you want a stable, tooth-root replacement, we can discuss Dental Implant Surgery.

Bridge

If the neighboring teeth already need crowns, a bridge may be a practical fixed solution. Same-day bridge options may be available through Same-Day Crowns And Bridges.

Dentures Or Partials

If multiple teeth are involved, Full And Partial Dentures may help restore function and appearance.

What To Do Before You Arrive

For a toothache, rinse with warm water, floss gently, and use a cold compress if swelling is present. For a cracked tooth, avoid chewing on that side. For a lost crown, save it if possible and keep the area clean.

If swelling is present, call promptly. Swelling may indicate infection that needs treatment and should not be ignored.

Why Same-Day Treatment Matters

The sooner we diagnose the issue, the more options we often have. A cracked tooth may be protected with a crown before it splits. An infected tooth may be saved with a root canal before the foundation worsens. A failing tooth may be removed and replaced with a clear plan before recurring emergencies continue.
